The drama 'Waves' by director and writer Jiří Mádl emerged as the standout winner at this year's Czech Lion Awards, securing six accolades from 14 nominations. The film, which revisits the intense atmosphere of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, captured the award for Best Feature Film. Mádl himself was honoured with awards for both Best Director and Best Screenwriter, highlighting his dual role in the film's success. Additionally, the film’s sound, managed by Viktor Ekrt, and performances by actors Tatiana Pauhofová and Stanislav Majer in supporting roles, were also recognised.
Although 'Waves' enjoyed significant success, it fell short of setting a new record, still trailing the 12-award triumph of the film 'Masaryk.' „We were prepared for any outcome," Mádl commented, expressing satisfaction with the evening's results. The film's producer, Monika Kristlová, acknowledged the enduring role of public broadcasters in Czech society while accepting the award for Best Feature Film.
'Waves' is expected to reach international audiences soon, with releases planned in France, Spain, Greece, and other countries. The film is currently featured at festivals in the United States, with potential offers for American distribution.

The ceremony, hosted at Prague's Rudolfinum, was characterised as smoothly executed though lacking in excitement. As the evening unfolded, other noteworthy winners included 'Ještě nejsem, kým chci být' by Klára Tasovská and Lukáš Kokeš, which won Best Documentary. Actress Pavla Beretová was awarded Best Actress for her role in 'Rok vdovy,' while Oldřich Kaiser won Best Actor for his portrayal in 'Zahradníkův rok.'
Besides 'Waves,' another strong contender, 'Amerikánka' by Viktor Tauš, secured three awards in visual categories, including Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Costume Design, underscoring the film's artistic excellence.
The awards ceremony, conducted by moderator and YouTuber Karel Kovy Kovář, saw 29 films competing in 22 categories. The Best TV Series or Miniseries went to 'Metoda Markovič: Hojer,' while 'Život k sežrání' won Best Animated Film. The event also celebrated contributors to Czech cinema, awarding lifetime achievements to director Karel Smyczek and conductor Mario Klemens posthumously.
