The Czech army has officially concluded its relief efforts after the severe floods that affected parts of the country, involving more than 5,400 soldiers. Following the inundation that hit mainly the Moravskoslezsko and Olomoucko regions, soldiers have been gradually withdrawing from the area.
According to a spokesperson from the general staff, the soldiers, who provided crucial support to the flood-hit zones, will complete their withdrawal by Monday. The flooding, which began in mid-September, resulted in extensive damage with estimated costs reaching up to 70 billion CZK.
The soldiers, including engineers and helicopter pilots, were initially deployed at the request of local authorities to aid in various tasks from evacuations and supply distribution to constructing temporary bridges. Over the past three months, military personnel have played a vital role in restoring normalcy and responding to the crisis in the affected areas.

The government's decision to deploy up to 2,000 soldiers was initially intended to last until October 31st, yet it was extended until the end of November to continue assistance with tasks such as clearing debris, disinfecting roads, and supporting infrastructure repairs.
In total, the soldiers helped in establishing over 50 temporary bridge structures, although not every request could be accommodated due to logistical challenges or evolving local government decisions. Ultimately, the engineers successfully set up 22 bridge and eight footpath installations from the country's emergency reserves to replace the destroyed vital connections.
For their service and dedication throughout the efforts, the soldiers are to receive rewards. On Wednesday, the Czech government approved an increment in the defense ministry's budget to fund wages and rewards for both career soldiers and reservists actively engaged during the emergency.
The September floods, characterized as some of the worst since 1997, caused significant disruptions, with flooding from the rivers Opava and Odra leading to evacuation orders, infrastructural damage, and power outages. By the time the waters receded, the disaster had resulted in six confirmed fatalities, with several people still unaccounted for.
