This year, over 154,000 students in Czechia have applied to high schools, surpassing last year's numbers. These aspiring students have submitted approximately 419,700 applications for various four-year programmes and multi-year grammar schools. Despite the official deadline passing, certain allowances enable late applications, subject to the acceptance of individual school administrators.
The head of the state organisation Cermat, Barbora Rosůlková, confirmed the figures and noted the electronic application system generally operated smoothly, barring a few temporary outages earlier in the week. While last year saw 157,000 applications in the first round across all forms of study, this year’s slight decrease still reflects a steady interest among students in furthering their secondary education.
Applicants had the option to submit up to five applications, with at least two targeting talent-based programmes, and the remaining possibly focusing on other areas. Overwhelmingly, students chose to apply electronically, a method favoured by 86.6% of candidates. Nonetheless, traditional paper forms and a hybrid of electronic and paper methods remained available and were utilised by a smaller fraction of students.

The Czech Ministry of Education highlights a notable uptick in interest for lyceums, with 17% of aspiring four-year programme students applying to these institutions, a rise from last year's 14.7%. In contrast, vocational programmes experienced a slight decline in applications. The ministry plans to release more comprehensive data in a press conference later this month, which should offer further insights into regional and programme-based application trends.
For students who miss the deadline, a provision exists to request consideration for late submissions. Acceptance of such requests lies at the discretion of school directors, who evaluate the legitimacy of the reasons provided. Schools are tasked with entering remaining paper-based applications into the system by February 25, after which pre-exam invitations will be processed and distributed.
The upcoming entrance exams are set for April 11 and 14 for four-year graduation programmes, while multi-year grammar schools will conduct their exams on April 15 and 16. An air of anticipation surrounds this season's academic proceedings, with educational authorities striving to ensure all processes occur smoothly and efficiently.
