According to a recent survey conducted by the Centre for Public Opinion Research (CVVM) in Czechia, former US Vice President Kamala Harris and French President Emmanuel Macron emerged as the most trusted foreign politicians among Czechs. The survey, which took place between mid-September and the end of November 2024, revealed that Harris earned the trust of 33% of respondents, while Macron garnered an equal percentage, albeit with a higher distrust rate of 40%.

The survey highlights that despite Harris losing her recent bid as the Democratic candidate in the US presidential elections, she has maintained a favourable impression across the Czech Republic. President Macron, known for his significant influence in European politics, similarly retains substantial support, though to a lesser degree compared to Harris due to the higher distrust figures.

Among European leaders, Polish President Andrzej Duda also stood out, with 26% of the Czechs trusting him, making him one of the few politicians where trust slightly outweighed distrust. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky followed closely, with a trust rating of 31%, though he faced a high distrust level of 56%.

Conversely, Russian President Vladimir Putin was viewed with the greatest scepticism, with a staggering 84% of Czech respondents expressing distrust. Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko was not far behind, with 70% of respondents lacking confidence in him.

Other foreign leaders such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former US President Joe Biden, and current US President Donald Trump also featured in the survey. Trust levels for these figures ranged from 19% to 25%, with Biden and Trump attracting a notable amount of distrust.

Despite these varied perceptions, the survey also noted a slight increase in trust for Trump, unlike other leaders who saw either stagnant or decreasing trust levels compared to earlier years. Moreover, the data pointed out that the distrust towards figures like Erdogan, Biden, Zelensky, Macron, and Scholz saw a minor decline when compared to the previous year.

This annual survey reflects the shifting dynamics and perceptions of global political figures as observed by the Czech population, suggesting a complex landscape of influence and trust on the international stage.
