Intense snowfall has been forecasted in the mountains of northern and northeastern Czechia, which has already seen a significant accumulation of snow. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the Jizera Mountains and the Krkonoše range have accumulated up to 25 centimetres of new, powdery snow from Friday through to Saturday morning. This snowfall is expected to intensify, with possibly another 25 centimetres falling over the coming days.

The ČHMÚ has issued warnings for snow drifts and snow tongues across these areas, as well as in the northern sections of the Českomoravská Vysočina. Meteorologists predict that the northeastern mountains, stretching from the Orlické Mountains to the Jeseníky, could also face similar conditions. The institute further notes that in regions including the Beskydy Mountains, snowfall may continue until Monday, contributing to a total snow accumulation up to 45 centimetres in certain areas.

As a result of the new snow in combination with strong winds, snow drifts are likely to develop at higher altitudes, particularly affecting transportation. The public is advised to monitor traffic reports carefully when planning travel to mountainous regions and to be prepared for extended travel times. The need for winter equipment, such as snow chains and tools for vehicle recovery, is emphasized. Additionally, motorists should carry warm clothing and a basic supply of food and beverages in case of emergencies.

The situation has led to increased avalanche risks in some areas. The Krkonoše Mountain Rescue Service has raised the avalanche danger to level two, signifying a moderate risk. Although conditions are generally safe for expeditions, caution is recommended, as the risk level might rise to three under persistent weather patterns through Sunday.

Ongoing weather updates predict further snowfall in the regions facing northward slopes, with the Jizera Mountains expected to receive between 35 to 50 centimetres of snow. As conditions are evolving, the ČHMÚ continues to monitor and provide updates to ensure public safety and awareness.
