Alena Pataky, the deputy mayor of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz, part of the city of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, has resigned from her position following controversial remarks about Roma students. The deputy mayor, who represented the ANO political movement, was responsible for education and culture. Her responsibilities will temporarily be managed by the district mayor, Petr Veselka, until a new deputy is appointed in February.
The resignation comes after Pataky made statements questioning the motivation and educational goals of Roma children, suggesting that they are 'genetically different' with no life objectives in education. These remarks sparked significant backlash from various sectors, including government representatives and human rights advocates. Criticisms highlighted the statements as unprofessional and offensive, not suitable for someone in her role.
Pataky, however, refrained from commenting further on her departure, stating she would not elaborate on the situation. Earlier responses from Pataky indicated remorse, acknowledging that her statements were expressed poorly and expressing regret over any offence caused, suggesting a willingness to apologize to those affected.

In the light of this issue, Veselka emphasized that Pataky had taken personal responsibility for her words. Although some within the council acknowledged potential misinterpretation, Veselka underscored that such statements were inappropriate and that the deputy mayor’s acknowledgment and resignation were commendable steps.
Pataky’s record over the past six years was also noted, with Veselka highlighting the significant investments in schools and improvements in social services achieved during her tenure. Nonetheless, the situation underscored the need for addressing deeper societal issues through an inclusive approach respecting human rights and striving for a just society.
Government representatives, including deputy chair for Roma affairs Marián Dancso and other human rights advocates, emphasized the importance of focusing on integration and supporting education for disadvantaged children instead of perpetuating harmful stereotypes. They advocated for a more inclusive educational framework.
Until February's district council meeting, Veselka will assume Pataky's duties, while the ANO representation on the council will nominate her successor in agreement with coalition partners.
