A potential strike by Czech ambulant specialists has been called off following successful negotiations with the Ministry of Health and health insurance providers. The doctors, who initially planned to close their practices on 29th and 30th October to protest against insufficient funding increases for 2025, reached an agreement ensuring increased financial support.
The breakthrough came after extensive discussions between healthcare representatives and the government. The Ministry of Health confirmed that four major insurers have agreed to the new terms, with negotiations ongoing to include three additional insurers. The final arrangement will see the total allocation for specialist healthcare rise slightly above the previously outlined budget of 44 billion crowns, with the promise to align more closely with sector needs.
Vlastimil Válek, the Minister of Health, noted the necessity of these agreements in maintaining the current standards of Czech healthcare. Furthermore, the head of the Association of Ambulant Specialists, Zorjan Jojko, underscored the importance of public awareness in driving the discussions toward a resolution. He emphasized that the reached compromise is a well-thought, albeit intermediate step toward resolving the systemic challenges faced by healthcare providers.

The agreement stipulates enhanced funding for healthcare services that meet specific quality criteria, ensuring that financial increments correlate with service improvements. This model aims to incentivize practices to maintain high standards of patient care.
This development averts the planned closure of specialist offices, signalling a return to normal operation for over 7,000 practitioners across the country. Jojko believes that this shows strong industry-wide support for the protest, with estimates suggesting three-quarters of specialists were prepared to join the strike if necessary.
Moreover, the discussions have laid the groundwork for future dialogues on structural healthcare reforms, with stakeholders keen to ensure resource allocation is aligned with patient-centric care rather than systemic constraints strictly dependent on financial boundaries.
